Whale Safari

One of the most amazing thing we did on our honeymoon, and something that I have always wanted to do, was to go on a whale safari! On the coast of St Lucia, we set out to look for Humpback whales.

At first we spent a long time trying to find the shop where we were to meet out tour guide. As we were walking past it a women called out to us and asked if we were going on the tour. Then we spent a few minutes talking to her, and bought a post card with Afrikaans words. (Howzit my bru?)

Then we went out on a small boat on very large waves, it was so much fun going out! We had to hold on for dear life as the boat flew over the waves! I loved it and James got soaked, ha ha!

We then sped out whilst looking out for a white spray to come out of the water. After about 15 minutes we saw some in the distance, and sped towards it.

It was a good day, and we were lucky! Two humpback whales were swimming right next to us, flopping their massive fins and spraying water.

Then they started jumping! 42 tons of whale flying through the air, and landing with a massive splash!

Wow!!

(Apparently the reason why they jump is that they swim so slowly so they get a lot of parasites living on them. The force with which they hit the water when they jump knocks all those little buggers off. That is why you often see birds following the whales about.)

Soon they were joined by a third whale, and then all kept jumping around us for about an hour before they slowly swam off. It was amazing!

Oh and they might not look that big in the pictures, but these giants were 14 m long. About the same size as the boat we were on.
